I want sequencing on the computer, but the rest on the Fantom. So that's already a + point.īut I don't like all those samples being on the computer and the others on the Fantom. But from what I have heared now (Garritan and Miroslav) it sounds very good! I think the 06 would be best for me at this moment.īut those sample cd's seem very interesting as well. Not a great deal.Īlas, if you had an XV-5080 or 3080 instead of a Fantom, you'd be able to have the best of both worlds-install SRX-04 for the great strings and SR/JV "Orchestral II" for the best of the legacy SR/JV classical sounds. Even still, while many of the horns and precussion elements are quite nice, the string sections are incredibly "synth" sounding, and the solo strings are okay but nothing to write home about.Īnd the largely religious waveforms from the "Vocal" SR/JV card are essentially useless unless you're creating horror movies or a remake of "The Name of the Rose." So, for $200 you basically get one decent set of legacy SR/JV waveforms, and two sets of largely mediocre waveforms. SRX-06, on the other hand, is valuable only for the waveforms that came from the original SR/JV "Orchestral II" card, whose samples were geometrical better and more useful than the mediocre SR/JV "Orchestral I" card. SRX-04 consists of completely new sectional string sections (don't count on it for solo strings it just don't have them) in a variety of configurations and bow techniques that are the most realistic string sound short of a software-sampled solution. Sorry, but as someone who owns SRX-04 and has owned both of the SR.JV "Orchestral" cards (and the vocal card) upon which SRX-06 is based, I have to say that for MOVIE music SRX-04 is hands down the must have card. I don't think you'll be dissapointed with SRX-04 or SRX-10 But with only 8 meg and trying to cram a whole set of orchestral samples into it, I can't believe its strings could compare with a 64 meg board exclusively dedicated to strings (SRX-04). I have nothing against the original SRJV expansion board samples - I owned 5 of them, including the orchestral board (SRJV-02 I believe). Since SRX-04 is focused entirely on strings, and was created well after the end of the JV libraries, which is what SRX-06 is a collection of, then I have to conclude that my ears do not deceive me - SRX-04 has much better and more varied strings. But with 60 days 'till NAMM, unless I needed the sounds right now, I would wait on SRX-06 to see if Roland ups the ante with a better quality set of orchestral samples. I would start with SRX-04 and SRX-10, and then add SRX-06. If I were doing serious orchestral stuff on a Roland unit with more than one SRX expansion, and not planning on using software based libraries such as Garritan, then I would definitely not substitute SRX-04 with SRX-06. Some say the strings on the complete orchestra are not that good, and it's better to get the symphonique strings board.īut the complete orchestra might be newer? (becuase it's number 6 instead of 4?).Īnd how about the quality of the complete orchestra compared to the symphonique strings, becuase it seems like they have gone for numbers instead of quality on the orchestra board(maybe).Īlready listened to all the demo's online (too much, but the symphonique strings dont have many examples, so not a fair comparison it seems. I think the complete orchestra is more what I want to have, but are the strings on that board any good? The srx 04- symphonique strings have better strings I believe, but the orchestra is more all round (has lots more sounds). I already searched the forums, but that didnt really made the choice any easier. Now the Fantom-S seems to lack a little bit a those sounds, so I'm thinking of getting a SRX board. You know, music with some orchestra and strings etc. I mainly compose what I like to call "movie music". Or better, I'm having a difficult time choosing between the two of them.
